Downtown Kodiak is usually lively, with plenty of comings and goings in the small-boat harbor and adjacent bars and cafés on Marine Way. The small Baranov Museum (June-Aug Mon-Fri 10am-4pm, Sat & Sun noon-4pm; Sept-Jan, March-May Mon-Wed & Fri 10am-4pm, Sat noon-3pm; $2), in an old Russian house opposite the dock, holds Aleut, Russian and American pioneer artifacts, including an impressive collection of whale bones. Nearby, the small but beautifully formed Alutiiq Museum , 218 Mission Rd (June-Aug Mon-Sat 10am-6pm, Sun 11am-4pm; Sept-May Tues-Sat 10am-4pm; $2), centers on the life and culture of the island's native people. Etched out of lush rainforest, less than four miles north, Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park is a great place to do some seabird- and whale-watching , camp or take a shoreline hike: a meadow at the north end provides a dazzling blaze of color in summer. Other moderately easy hiking trails originating near town go to the top of Pillar Mountain and Termination Point. However, most trails are not maintained and can be confusing; get precise details from the visitor center or the rangers at Fort Abercrombie. The undulating and unpaved Chiniak Highway runs for 48 miles to Cape Greville and the Road's End Café , sweeping through tightly bunched spruce and passing many abandoned World War II defenses, plus prime vistas of Chiniak Bay.
