Ferries dock downtown once a week. Alaska Airlines and ERA Aviation jointly dispatch eight one-hour flights a day from Anchorage at around $290 round-trip. The local bus runs five miles into town roughly every ninety minutes (not Sun) for $2. The most practical way to explore the island is to fly ; Uyak Air's Kodiak trips (phone 907/486-3407 or 1-800/303-3407), which guarantee close-up views of bears or your money back, have never had to refund the $400-plus fee. The helpful visitor center is by the ferry dock at 100 Marine Way and the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, close to the airport, four miles south of town, stocks a wealth of information on bears and the backcountry.
