Ferries dock two miles north of downtown on Tongass Highway; city buses stop here every 30 minutes until 9.30pm (Sun 3.30pm). Alaska Airlines serve the airport , which is on an island and is linked to town by half-hourly ferries ($2.50). The visitor center stands downtown at 131 Front St (daily 7am-5pm; phone 907/225-6166 or 1-800/770-3300, ), and for information about the surrounding Tongass forests visit the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center , 50 Main St (daily 8am-5pm; phone 907/228-6220, ), a striking cedar-framed building which houses absorbing displays ($4) of the region's natural habitats and native culture. Scores of companies run sightseeing excursions , among them Alaska Sourdough Tours (phone 907/225-4081 or 1-888/801-7596), which takes you around town and to the two major totem pole sites at Saxman and Totem Bight. Promech Air (phone 907/225-3845 or 1-800/860-3845). Taquan Air (phone 907/225-8800 or 1-800/770-8800) offer floatplane trips from just $60, while Southeast Sea Kayaks (phone 907/225-1258 or 1-800/287-1607) or Southeast Exposure, 515 Water St (phone 907/225-8829), will take you sea kayaking along the fjords; a four-hour trip costs around $80 with day rental for experienced paddlers from $30. The latter also rents bikes. |
