Fairbanks's restaurants options are varied, with good Thai particularly prevalent. They're also well scattered, with downtown and College Road, toward the university, having the greatest concentrations.

For groceries try the 24-hour Carr's supermarket downtown at 526 Gafney Rd. Fairbanks has its decent nightspots, though none lie in hard-drinking downtown.

Blue Loon Mile 353.5 Parks Hwy phone 907/457-5666.Late-closing hotspot five miles west of Fairbanks that's always good for a convivial drink. Hosts local and touring bands (sometimes a DJ) several nights a week, and screens cult and art-house movies. Closed Sun.

The Diner 244 Illinois St phone 907/451-0613. Reliable joint serving diner fare cooked to perfection at good prices.

Gambardella's Pasta Bella 706 2nd Ave, downtown phone 907/456-3417. Fairbanks's best Italian and not wildly expensive, with a pleasant outdoor area for those endless summer evenings.

Gulliver's Books Café 3525 College Rd phone 907/474-9574. Pleasant spot above a bookstore, serving chicken tarragon wraps, pesto turkey melts, bagels, biscotti and coffee all at reasonable prices, and offering free internet access to boot.

Howling Dog Saloon Mile 11 Old Steese Hwy, Fox phone 907/457-8780. An inconvenient eleven miles north of town, but perhaps the best bar in the north - unassuming, unpretentious and fun. Live rock and R&B bands perform and it's the ideal place to play volleyball under the midnight sun.

The Marlin 3412 College Rd phone 907/479-4646. Poky wood-paneled cellar bar that defines the cutting edge of Fairbanks's music scene with live bands - blues, jazz and rock - playing most evenings from around 9pm and only a small cover charge, if any.

Pump House Mile 1.3 Chena Pump Rd phone 907/479-8452. A local favorite in a historic pump house, stuffed with gold mining paraphernalia and set by the Chena River with a deck to watch river life go by. Great for steak, seafood and burgers, and also pulls in a substantial drinking crowd.

Souvlaki 1119 2nd Ave, downtown phone 907/452-5393. Bargain Greek and American dishes served in Spartan surroundings. Stuffed vine leaves are only 50˘ each, Greek salad and spanakopita are both under $4, and crab quiche and souvlaki barely break $6. Closed Sun.

Thai House 526 5th Ave, downtown phone 907/452-6123. A small but ever-popular restaurant serving the usual range of Thai dishes, but all done to perfection and at very modest prices for around $9. The green and red curries with zucchini, peas and peppers are especially good. Closed Sun.
